Invisalign® Q&A

by Imran Rizvi, DDS

Who is a Good Candidate for Invisalign® Trays?

Individuals who have slight abnormalities in the alignment or curvature of their teeth are considered to be excellent candidates for Invisalign® trays. The trays are clear and are almost undetectable once they are placed within the mouth. They are easy to remove and can be taken out whenever the need arises. Individuals who speak publicly or make frequent public appearances can benefit from the use of the Invisalign® system. As long as the trays are worn for the recommended amount of time every day, the patient can remove them for meals. during class time, or if they are out in public.

Is One Round of Treatment Enough?

In most cases, one round of treatment with the Invisalign® trays is sufficient enough to produce the desired results. If something changes during the course of the first round of treatment, the orthodontist may recommend a second round of treatment to ensure the patient is satisfied with the results. Because the movement of the teeth is gradual and a different tray is used to make each adjustment, there may need to be small alterations if something occurs that prevents a certain tray from performing as it should. Problems with the shape of a tooth or the angle with which it moves can lead to the need for slight modifications in the treatment plan.

Are Invisalign® Trays Safe?

Invisalign® trays are safe and will not harm the teeth in any way. Unlike traditional braces, nothing is glued or attached to the teeth that cannot be removed if necessary. The clear trays are made of an extremely hard, but durable plastic that gently snaps onto the bottom edge of the teeth. Molds of the teeth are used to create the trays, so they will fit each tooth exactly. Gentle pressure is used to guide the teeth into their new position. The teeth are not forced out of place. Invisalign® trays can be removed during meals so no food or debris gets stuck. The tray can be put back in place after the teeth have been brushed and flossed.
